Taino to Present Cultural Program at Pequot Museum


UCTP Taino News – Members of the Cacibajagua Taino Cultural Society will present a Taino cultural program at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. The program takes place from 1-2pm and is open to the public. The group will present Taino music and dance as well as discuss the meaning of the various songs and how the Taino instruments are played and made. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum offers engaging experiences for all ages, from life-size walk-through dioramas that transport visitors into the past, to changing exhibits and live performances of contemporary arts and cultures. Excerpt from "The Voice of the Taino People: Gathering of Elders of the Ancient Traditions in India," Volume 6, Issue 1, January – March 2003, pg. 1:

MUMBAI, INDIA – From 4-9 February 2003, more than 180 delegates from about 40 countries representing various ancient religions and traditions of the world attended the First International Conference and Gathering of the Elders of Ancient Traditions and Cultures...

Among the various dignitaries who addressed the conference was an impressive delegation of Indigenous Leaders from the throughout the Americas (including the Caribbean). This dynamic contingent included representatives of the Maya, Navajo, Cherokee, Squamish, Carib and Taíno Nations. The Caribbean delegates included Chief Ricardo Bharat Hernandez of the Santa Rosa Carib Community, as well as Sylvia Karayaturey Rosario and Roberto Múkaro Borrero who were representing the United Confederation of Taíno People (UCTP) and the Cacibajagua Cultural Society...

In recognition of the 200th anniversary of Haitian independence, in this program children will hear Taíno Indian songs and stories presented by Sylvia Karayaturey Rosario and Roger Atihuibancex Hernandez, members of the Cacibajagua Taino Cultural Society. The Taíno are the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean islands. The name Haiti comes from the Taíno language and means "land of high mountains." For info contact AMNH at 212-769-5315.
